Competition Drones

FPV, or First Person View Drone Racing, is a sport type where participants control drones equipped with cameras while wearing head-mounted displays showing the live stream camera feed from the drones. The racer will see what the drone sees. Similar to full-size air racing, the goal is to complete a set course as quickly as possible.

Generally, FPV drone racing leagues require all the drones to meet certain standards. Although you could use any drone to race, typically racing drones specialize in speed and agility. Motors are positioned to thrust the drone forward. In some instances, drones can reach speeds of up to 120mph. Racing drones are typically a lot smaller than a traditional drone, allowing for increased acceleration and maneuverability. Since they are much faster and have very sensitive controls, beginners should practice to get a feel for the drone as high-speed crashes might not be forgiving. Set up a small practice course in an area of open land.

Drones can be purchased as either ready to fly or almost ready to fly, the ladder allowing for personal customization. You will need a racing drone, a controller, a wide-angle camera, a video transmitter, and a display (consisting of either goggles or a monitor) to begin FPV racing.

There are many locations where you can participate in a FPV drone race. Most places are associated with drone racing chapters such as the Drone Racing League.

The racing area consists of hoops, cones, flags, gates, and tunnels to create a circuit. Various lighting effects are also used around the arena.

The goal is to complete the circuit as fast as possible without crashing! Hopefully winning!
